Say What Now?

There’s only one other time I went to the dentist without sedation and that’s when my very first set of bottom temps fell off. That appt was only 5 minutes… he just put more glue in them and placed them back on. You can read about that one HERE. But today marks a huge milestone because I had to have my bottoms removed by him first before he can put the new ones on.

Unlike last week, this week was just awesome! Granted I was a nervous wreck but I knew nothing drastic was going to happen. I just kept taking deep breaths and joking around. There was a girl in the waiting room and we just kept looking at her and poking fun because she was wearing an eskimo coat in 31 degree Celsius weather! So that took my mind off of things a little bit.

Get called into the room and sat in the chair. Pulled out my stuffed green frog and gave it a couple twists and squeezes and just held on to it tightly. You can see the nose at the bottom of the image below. Anyway…. Dr. Nirav said he was going to use a tool to remove my messed up bottoms. He asked if I wanted to be numb I said only if it’s gonna hurt but I knew it wouldn’t. He said I shouldn’t need any Novocain but would if I wanted it. The tool is sorta weird. I looked at it but then closed my eyes as he yanked on the device. I didn’t feel anything except pressure, but when he hooked the thing on the other piece I felt some pain. Too much glue (cement!) holding it on so I did grumble and moan a bit but then it was off.

By this time I was quite relaxed. He cleaned off a few extra bits of old plastic, then put the new temps in my mouth to see how they fit. He started with my right side which now gives me two molars to chew with. These fit much nicer than the last ones because they just fell off right after my appt. I had been without those molars for about 3 weeks. Anyway, those finally fit well, then he put the left side molars in but they felt too big or bulky or something. The furthest molar was touching the side of my tongue and I felt the urge to gag. Unfortunately I ripped it out and said something. He put that piece aside and put the front ones on. Easy. So he wanted me to try and put the left side back in but my tongue just kept flicking it off.

Now back in the beginning of this blog I mentioned about my gag reflex. I also mentioned I can’t suck a lollipop or hold a pen in my mouth or chew gum for very long without feeling like I’m gonna gag. So Dr. Nirav decided to leave the left side off and I’ll just have to chew on my right. No worries. Then he’ll call the Lab where my permanents are being made and ask them to adjust that far molar down a bit more. Lessen the size of it before they get too far into them. With that, he took them out, dried off my teeth, then placed them back in with the cement to hold them on. Biting down until the cement dried. And that was it, I was done! 20 minutes!

I was so elated and so relaxed and so relieved that I had let them in my mouth I literally wanted to cry! But I held back the tears. Dr. Nirav said I did extremely well and that he was so pleased. He said that when my permanents come in, that it’ll just be a repeat of today. No sedation will be needed. YAY! I can do this! I’m just a bit freaked out that the permanents on the left side will be a problem for me. I haven’t had a back molar since my early 20’s when it was removed so it’s something my mouth just isn’t used to feeling.

Ok, so that’s my fab story for today! He’s gonna call me in about 2 weeks time when my perms are in. Then we head for the tops! Which I’ll be looking forward to more impressions! GAH!! And my tops are a problem for me with gagging so this should be real fun! Ok, so on to the picture!!
